The unique vibrational quality of a mantra allows you to take your awareness into a deep inner silence. When this happens, mental activity decreases along with overall biochemical activity. Heart and brain wave coherence increases. This gives the body a rest deeper than sleep.
In addition, we train the mind to become more focused, gaining heightened awareness and mental clarity so that we’re able to concentrate better and do anything more effectively.
Using a Mantra
A mantra is an instrument of the mind (man means “mind,” and tra means “instrument). This sound-bite world has almost substituted the word “mantra” for mission statement (think “just do it” and “seize the day”), however trivial (“I must find the bag to go with these shoes”). The Yogic tradition, where the word originated, used a Sanskrit symbol for mantra, which is a word or phrase that, once repeated, creates sonic vibrations within our deepest being that trigger and engage deep spiritual experience.
Choose your mantra or get one assigned, as in Transcendental Meditation and Primordial Sound Meditation instruction. (The Chopra Center for Well-Being uses this approach.) If you choose your own, select a word that has meaning for you. Try your children’s names, the words “one,” “peace,” and “love.” If you enjoy saying the word and feel the connection to it’s meaning, your mantra is all the more powerful.
Your mantra can be used throughout your day to bring you into a more relaxed and present state. Use it.
